TWENTY-TWO

Shannon Holske was the person Maisie was referring to. No surprise to me. Maisie had already told me that she was her number one suspect.

It looked as if Shannon wanted to get into the casket with Kaitlyn. She was bent over close, her body shaking from the sobs. Someone was standing next to her, a girl who looked familiar, maybe someone else from high school. The other woman had her one arm around Shannon’s shoulders. She was speaking low to her—I could see her lips moving close to Shannon’s ear. The line was backed up because of her machinations.

“Shannon?” Riya asked. “That’s who you think did it?” Clearly, that assessment surprised her.

“Motive: jealousy,” Maisie said as if she was talking in code.

Riya nodded. I guessed she understood the jargon. “She’s crying awfully hard, though.”

“Makes her even more suspect,” Maisie said. “She’s putting on a show. Trying to lead everyone away from her hand in the deed.”

Her hand in the deed . . .

I stretched my eyes. It sounded far-fetched to me, especially with Maisie using all of these Sherlock Holmes–esque terms. I’d agreed with Maisie’s reasons for suspecting Shannon, but sobbing as a ruse didn’t make sense to me.

Because, I thought, no one, except for Maisie, thinks of her as a suspect, do they?

I said “no one” as if there were gaggles of amateur sleuths running around trying to solve the murder. Only the police. I turned around and spied every corner of the chapel, but I didn’t see one cop anywhere.

Not even a glimpse of Detective Beverly.

I narrowed my eyes at Maisie and wondered where she’d gotten the idea that murderers showed up at funerals. Certainly, the Chagrin Falls Police Department didn’t concur with that theory.
